TBPS 2017!

The Tampa Bay Photo Shootout is a photography festival which brings photographers from across the country to Tampa Bay for photography, education, sightseeing, and camaraderie.  The event showcases the natural beauty of Florida along with the photography expertise of highly respected professional photographers.  The Shootout is organized and managed by Outdoor Photo Workshops (OPW) in conjunction with St. Petersburg College (SPC), Clearwater Campus.

The first question we often get, and you may even be asking, is, “So, why Tampa Bay?” The Tampa Bay area of Florida is one of North America’s gem’s for outdoor and nature photography, abounding in wildlife and beautiful scenery.  Through this event we are able to showcase the beauty and diversity the area has to offer both visitors and residents while providing attendees a outstanding weekend packed full of informative workshops, great networking opportunities, unbelievable outdoor photography subjects, and most of all, fun! Unique courses, exceptional instructors, incredible photo opportunities, all in one weekend in the beautiful outdoors… who could ask for more!?!

FAQ
Tampa Bay Photo Shootout FAQ’s

Who can attend the shootout? Anyone with an interest in photography at any level is welcome. Although many of the sessions will be aimed at advanced amateur photographers, we try to have something available for everyone. The photo workshops will be a chance for people of all levels to mingle, learn and enjoy photographing the beautiful Tampa Bay area.

What is the Shootout registration fee and what is included and not included with that? The full weekend Shootout registration fee is $225.  The fee includes Photography 101, the Friday Welcome and Keynote Presentation, one admission to each of the 4 four workshop sessions, the Saturday Lunch ‘n’ Mingle & Photography Fun, and the Sunday Lunch Presentation.

There is also a One Day Registration which includes the morning and afternoon photography workshops on EITHER Saturday OR Sunday as well as all of the activities on Friday.  The cost for the one day registration is $149.  The lunchtime session on the chosen day is also included.

The fee does not include entrance fees to parks, food, lodging, transportation, portfolio reviews, tips, or any other optional, add-on. If an event has an additional fee, it will be noted in the “Things to know” section within the description.

There is a discounted student registration fee of $112.50 for the full weekend and $74.50 for the one day option.  Students must be full-time and a student ID is required. Please email Nicole with documentation of student status prior to registering to receive your discount code.

How can I get an awesome 2017 Shootout t-shirt? You can order your discounted Shootout t-shirt during registration.  As long as you order your shirt prior to February 1st, you can pick it up at check-in on Friday night with no shipping charges. There will be an extremely limited number of shirts available at the event, so if you want one, you will need to pre-order it when you register for the event.  After the date we place the order, if there are extra shirts available, they will be listed on the website, so if it allows you to place the order, you will receive the shirt.

Is transportation provided? No, participants are expected to provide their own transportation. However, each workshop meets up with the rest of their group in the parking lot at SPC and carpool from there. For some workshops, participants might be encouraged or required to carpool due to limited parked or vehicle entrance fees. Participants should be aware of travel times between areas. We will provide directions for each of the workshop locations upon check-in.

What airport should I fly in to?  You will be flying into Tampa International Airport (TPA) which is about 30 minutes away.  Depending on where you are flying from, if you want to come in to St. Pete – Clearwater International Airport (PIE), you can do that as well. It is a little closer, about 14 minutes, but despite the “international” name, it is a small airport and not a lot of airlines go into it.

Where will classes be held? The St. Petersburg College (SPC), Clearwater Campus, 2465 Drew Street, Clearwater, FL 33765, will be our main hub for the Shootout. All classroom sessions will be held in the ES building on campus at SPC. Outdoor sessions are within an hour drive or less of the campus and we will be carpooling from SPC.

Where should I stay? That is up to the individual.  The 2016 Shootout will be based around Clearwater, Florida.  So places like Clearwater and Largo will be the closest to activities. However, Safety Harbor, Dunedin, and St. Petersburg are within a reasonable distance, but you should check driving times between locations. Here’s a starting point for hotel and lodging reservations in the area.

We are working on a group rate at a nearby hotel and will post the information here as soon as it is finalized.

There are of course other hotels in the area that you are welcome to check out:

Are meals provided? No, none of the sessions include meals. Some of the socials might have snacks, but you should plan on eating on your own.

Is tipping okay or expected? If you are attending a workshop where there are models (human or animal) or animal handlers, we do highly recommend tipping these people. Tipping of your instructor is never expected, but always appreciated.

What will the weather be like? It can be many things. But for the norm that time of year will be sunny and dry during the days with highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. At night, you can expect temperatures to drop to low to mid 60’s. Overall, it is a fantastic time of year to be in Florida! However, we can have a heat wave or even a cold front that time of year, so check the forecast before you pack!  We always recommend dressing in layers that you can add or remove as the weather changes throughout the day.

What time zone will we be in? We are on the west coast of Florida which is in the Eastern time zone.

What should I bring with me to the Shootout? Here is a link to a TBPS Suggested Pack List.  Please keep in mind that each workshop is different, so you will want to make sure you have the appropriate gear and clothing for the workshops you have registered for and that you keep an eye on the weather before heading out.  If there is something unique recommended for a specific workshop, it will be listed in the what to bring section under that workshop.

Model Releases All participants are responsible for supplying/obtaining any needed model releases or property releases for their photographs. No forms will be available at the workshops.

Other information Photographers will retain all rights to their images taken during the weekend. The Tampa Bay Photo Shootout and it’s partners claim no ownership of any images from any photographers attending the Shootout.

What is the Registration Deadline? We don’t have a deadline for the event as long as we still have workshops available. However, there may be earlier deadlines for some things such as the t-shirts. While there is not a deadline, please understand that we do have to print things like nametags a week or so before the event, so if you register after they are printed, your nametag will be handwritten (with fair warning that I have terrible handwriting!)
